Green Hydrogen Projects in Latin America and the Caribbean

Currently, there are more than 140 green hydrogen projects in Latin America and the Caribbean in different stages of development, mainly in the pre-feasibility and feasibility phases. Although current hydrogen production in this region is mainly obtained from fossil fuels, some countries have already gained experience with water electrolysis, according to the report “Renewable Hydrogen in Latin America & The Caribbean: Opportunities, Challenges and Pathways” .

The constant increase in the price of natural gas used by industry could be mitigated considerably by the alternation of fuels in the same production plant, an energy saving measure in times of unbridled growth in energy costs. This is already possible today from a technical point of view with the use of existing mixed combustion systems already in Spain, explains Iñigo Béjar, CEO of E&M Combustión in the Interempresas publication.

The Chinese steel industry points to a change in strategy, with movements in the sector. China is moving to control the country's iron ore imports through a new state pool that could be operational by the end of this year, as the Xi Jinping administration seeks to increase Beijing's pricing power over the industry. Led by the China Iron and Steel Association and the Ministry of Planning, the initiative involves large state-owned mining and steel groups such as Baowu, China Minmetals Corp and Aluminum Corporation of China, according to people familiar with the operation.

The Government of Germany and its regions are committed to green hydrogen with a stimulus package both for its internal development and in other countries. Germany has firmly committed to the development of hydrogen as an energy vector for the decarbonisation of the economy, since the German Government considers green hydrogen as the only sustainable long-term.
