Technologies for oil and gas: The Spanish thermal engineering firm E&M Combustion will participate in the construction project of the Ajaokuta Kaduna Kano gas pipeline in Nigeria, led by an international consortium, destined for the state corporation Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Tecnologies for oil and gas
E&M Combustion’s specialized combustion technologies for the oil and gas sector will be implemented in integrated fluid heating systems. These systems optimize processes by raising the temperature of the natural gas transported from the reservoir through the pipeline, thereby reducing its dew point—a critical operational risk. The heating equipment thus prevents the formation of hydrates that could clog pipes and equipment.
Gas heating in pipelines is a critical process used primarily to prevent the formation of hydrates and ice, as well as to avoid blockages in pipes and equipment. Gas heating systems are also used after decompression processes to improve turbine combustion efficiency.
In this Ajaokuta Kaduna Kano (AKK) pipeline project, the Spanish company will soon supply six JBM-HP monoblock burners, designed by the company and ATEX certified for safe operation in potentially explosive atmospheres. These units feature specific electrical and mechanical components to prevent accidental ignitions and ensure reliable operation in environments where the presence of flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust poses a risk.
The burners developed for this oil and gas application are compact units that integrate the motors and fans into a single unit. They are automated by electronic control units and feature low emissions. The units offer a wide range of power outputs—up to 25 MW thermal—adapting to the specific needs of each location.
E&M Combustion’s combustion technologies for oil and gas projects are present in various international projects in the Middle East, India, the United States, and Africa, where they operate in units such as Indirect Fire Heaters, Fired Heaters, and Bath Heaters.
Boosting Nigeria’s Industrialization
NNPC has completed welding the main section of the pipeline, including the crossing over the Niger River, a technical challenge that had delayed the project’s progress. According to local authorities, this achievement paves the way for connecting the pipeline and completing all the necessary connections over the coming weeks. Once operational, the pipeline will transport gas throughout northern Nigeria, boosting the country’s industrial and economic activity.
For Nigeria, this is not just about energy but also about industrialization: it will lead to the development of fertilizer plants, power generation facilities, and gas-based industries in the towns of Kaduna, Kano, Abuja, and Ajaokuta, where industrial parks are expected to emerge.
Nigeria has become the latest African nation to develop an impressive energy infrastructure, positioning it as a regional leader in the energy market. The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline is a 614 km, $2.8 billion infrastructure project undertaken by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL). Designed to transport 3.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day from the south to the north, the project aims to increase power generation by 3,600 MW and boost industrial growth.
