On April 7, the United Kingdom announced the selection of 27 projects in the Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2), which supports the production of low-carbon hydrogen across the country. The initiatives are part of the government’s Plan for Change, which aims to revitalize the country’s industrial centers and reduce emissions in high-intensity sectors.

This new round adds to a set of 11 projects previously funded in HAR1, including Whitelee Green Hydrogen in Scotland. The new projects could attract more than £1 billion in private sector investment by 2029, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Emissions. To date, £400 million has been invested, creating more than 700 jobs in towns such as Milford Haven and High Marnham.

Implementation of industrial hydrogen and diversification

The shortlisted projects focus on energy-intensive sectors, such as ammonia production, bricks and glass, clean energy generation, and sustainable aviation fuel production. The government has placed particular emphasis on a large-scale industrial decarbonization strategy based on hydrogen generated by electrolysis using renewable electricity.

Among the beneficiaries of the first round is the Bradford Low Carbon Project, which will develop a 10.6 MW alkaline electrolyzer to supply hydrogen to heavy-duty mobility equipment. Meanwhile, in Scotland, the Cromarty Hydrogen Project, led by Scottish Power (Iberdrola) and Storegga, will use electricity from nearby wind farms to power an 11 MW electrolyzer to supply local industries. This project seeks to develop a green hydrogen production center in the Cromarty Firth region and centers around local distilleries that form the base demand for the project’s initial phases, allowing them to decarbonize in line with their own industry ambitions and objectives.

Hydrogen projects in the UK: structuring the supply chain

The HAR2 initiative reflects the commitment to enhancing the value of technical jobs in industrial regions. It includes opportunities for apprentices, engineers, welders, and maintenance operators. Emphasis is also placed on developing local energy hubs and supply chains in England, Scotland, and Wales.

According to Industry Minister Sarah Jones, the HAR2 program enables the commercial deployment of hydrogen in the UK for the first time. The implementation of these projects will boost economic growth and the government’s ambition to become a clean energy powerhouse.

E&M Combustion’s contribution to hydrogen projects

In this context of ongoing Green Hydrogen projects, the engineering firm E&M Combustión, specializing in the design and manufacture of Combustion Technologies for industrial processes, develops burners and combustion systems that operate with hydrogen as fuel and mixed burners for operation with hydrogen and hydrogen blends with other fuels. Hydrogen added to other types of fuel contributes to significantly optimizing standard fuel combustion systems, thus improving energy efficiency, while saving fuel and eliminating air pollutants and solid waste.

JBD burners are the most widely used duoblock equipment for hydrogen operation. They are designed to overcome high combustion chamber overpressures. They are manufactured in the 1,000 to 85,000 kW range and are used with all types of liquid and gaseous fuels.

The main features of JBD combustion equipment include their innovative design, low NOx emissions, and the dual air register they utilize. The standard range includes burners for traditional fuels such as diesel, natural gas, LPG, fuel oil, and mixed burners that use gas-diesel, gas-fuel oil, or hydrogen. E&M Combustión also manufactures special combustion equipment for burning biogas, recycled oils, and other alternative fuels.
