Iñaki Calvo.- E&M Combustion advances its R&D in mathematical modeling to improve combustion in industrial facilities. E&M Combustión, dedicated to the engineering and manufacturing of high-tech industrial burners, has recently implemented a welding robot in its workshops, which will allow it to expand its production capacity.

It also plans to develop an R&D project over the next two years to implement a mathematical modeling system to improve combustion in industrial facilities. The project aims to improve the design of applications for new equipment in a faster and more reliable manner.

Mathematical modeling to improve combustion

According to the company’s CEO, Iñigo Béjar, who spoke to Empresa XXI, E&M Combustión will rely on software for computational combustion models developed by the BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center). “There will be a kind of technology transfer, although we will contribute our share of R&D to implement it in our equipment.” “Basically, what this will allow us to do is predict a series of results based on how the equipment will behave in real-life operation.”

This will allow the company to improve its design capabilities and streamline development, “because what we did in real facilities using the trial-and-error method, we will be able to do on a computer, which will increase reliability and speed,” explains the manager.

At the same time, the Biscayan firm, which expects to close 2025 with activity and revenue figures similar to those of the previous year, continues to fulfill its orders for industrial burners. In this regard, it recently commissioned a Low NOx multi-fuel burner at a Gipuzkoa cement plant modernized by Loesche, an engineering firm specializing in the design and manufacture of vertical roller mills for grinding coal, cement raw materials, granulated slag, and other minerals. Specifically, it has incorporated one of its combustion units to operate in a hot gas generator used for cement drying. The company emphasized that its use allows for maximum energy recovery.

More sustainable facilities

The installation supplied by E&M Combustión features a JBM-HP 17000 GFO mixed fuel oil/biodiesel and natural gas/hydrogen monoblock modulating burner with electronic regulation and air atomization for hot air application, which also reduces atmospheric emissions. Furthermore, the equipment is designed to operate in ATEX Zone 2, areas that require safe installations suitable for operation in potentially explosive spaces.

In addition to the Low NOx hydrogen burner, E&M Combustión’s supply also includes the installation of fuel oil, gas, and air atomization lines. Combustion in the line can be carried out by burning the fuels individually or simultaneously, with the option of switching from one fuel to another thanks to its automatic configuration.
