The Spanish engineering company E & M Combustion, specialized in Combustion Technologies for industrial processes, has developed an hydrogen burner – a renewable energy – to operate in an innovative combustion plant of a chemical complex in Portugal. The mixed burner designed by the company operates together with a water-tube steam boiler supplied by Prodinco, which produces 1500 KW, at a working pressure of 25 bar.

The particularity and complexity of this installation, implemented by the company Integral Combustion Solutions, has consisted in the development of a type of mixed burner, which can operate with a mixture of three fuels: hydrogen, natural gas and CO. Thus, the equipment can operate in modalities with the exclusive use of natural gas as fuel, or with a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen and also with a mixture of natural gas and CO, depending on the needs of the plant.

Hydrogen added to other types of fuel contributes to considerably optimize standard fuel combustion systems, thus improving energy efficiency, while saving fuel and eliminating air pollutants and solid waste.

Hydrogen burner

The hydrogen burner developed by E & M Combustion for this chemical plant corresponds to model JBD-3500 GHCO. JBD burners are duoblock devices that are designed to overcome high combustion chamber overpressures. They are manufactured in the range of 1,000 to 85,000 KW and are used with all types of liquid and gaseous fuels.

Among the main characteristics of the JBD burner are its innovation in design, as well as the Low NOx emissions and the double air register that they use. The standard range includes burners for traditional fuels such as gas oil, natural gas and G.L.P., fuel oil and mixed burners that use gas-oil and gas-fuel oil. E & M Combustion also makes special combustion equipment for the burning of biogas, recycled oils and other types of alternative fuels.

Combustion Engineering

E & M Combustion designs JBD burners to obtain different flame lengths and shapes depending on the adjustment of the air registers and the manufacture of different types of headers, so that it manufactures equipment with flames that adapt to different logs or combustion chambers.

Another advantage of the JBD burners is the regulation from standard electronic control units that allow the use of frequency inverters for the regulation of the fan and 02 probes. Optionally the combustion equipment can use 10 “screens with a specific software for the monitoring and control of the burner. They allow telemanagement and remote control via Ethernet or from P.L.Cs.

In the case of this chemical plant, the operation with hydrogen will allow a greater energy efficiency of the boiler and a reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, since it only emits steam water. Hydrogen is considered a clean energy and it has a higher calorific value than diesel or other used  fuels.
