To support its goal, the DOE has introduced the LPO (Loan Program Office) to promote green hydrogen projects in the US, targeting the clean hydrogen supply chain. The tax credits are provided through funding of the Hydrogen Hub under the Inflation Reduction Act. With government support and programs, several green hydrogen projects have been announced.

Among the main green hydrogen projects in the US, some of those collected by Blackridge Research and Consulting stand out, taking into account the capacity of the electrolyzers.

Hydrogen City Project

ABB is collaborating with Green Hydrogen International (GHI) on the Hydrogen City project located in South Texas, an initiative that will produce 280,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. In March 2024, ABB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GHI that includes the utilization of ABB’s automation, electrification and digital technology for the deployment of the project. Previously, in October 2023, Inpex Corporation (INPEX), Japan’s largest oil and gas exploration and production company, had signed a joint study agreement for this production center.

The Hydrogen City project consists of a Power-to-X facility that will use onshore wind and solar energy to power a 2.2 GW electrolyzer plant and produce 280,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. The hydrogen produced at Hydrogen City will produce one million tonnes of green ammonia annually, which will be exported to meet demand in Europe and Asia.

HIF USA – Matagorda eFuels Facility

Another of the main green hydrogen projects in the US is the Matagorda eFuels facility (HIF USA), which is expected to become the first large-scale e-Fuels facility in the world. It is being planned by HIF USA LLC, a subsidiary of HIF Global in Matagorda County, South Texas. HIF USA will use renewable wind energy and electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. In addition to this production of green hydrogen, the facility will capture CO2 and hydrogen to produce e-fuels through synthesis.

In April 2023, HIF Global received the environmental permit to begin construction of the Matagorda County project in 2024, with the goal of commencing commercial operations in 2027. HIF Global signed a reserve agreement with Siemens Energy for the supply of an electrolyzer of 1.8 GW for installation. Previously, HIF USA had hired Bechtel Energy, Siemens Energy and Topsoe to carry out the FEED (Front End Engineering and Design) study of the project.

Bechtel Energy will undertake the engineering and design of the facility, while Siemens Energy and Topsoe Technologies will supply the equipment. The project will use a Silyzer 300 electrolyser to produce 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, with Topsoe providing engineering and design for methanol and methanol-to-gasoline processes. This project will involve an investment of 6 billion dollars and will produce 1.4 million tons of e-methanol per year. Once launched, the project will capture around 2 million tons of CO2 emissions per year.

ACES Delta Hub, phase 1

ACES Delta Hub (Advanced Clean Energy Storage) plans its construction in two phases. The green hydrogen will be stored in two salt caverns with a capacity of 300 GWh that can store up to 11,000 tons of green hydrogen.

The green supply originated by ACES Delta Hub will supply the nearby IPP Renewed “Intermountain Power Agency” power plant, which will use the green hydrogen for the storage of deliverable and seasonal renewable energy.

The project’s electrolyzers are two advanced-class Mitsubishi Power J series gas turbines already installed in July 2023.
